Distinguishing Normal Moods from Clinical Mood States

While everyone experiences mood fluctuations, often in response to life events like the joy of a major victory or the sadness of a loss, these are considered normal. In contrast, the mood shifts in people with mood disorders are fundamentally different. They are extreme in nature, distort the individual's overall outlook on life, and are severe enough to impair their ability to function.
