Divergent Inflation Paths of Spain and West Germany (1970-1999)

Between 1970 and 1999, the inflation trajectories of Spain and West Germany differed starkly. Starting from a similar point of around 5% inflation in 1970, Spain experienced a period of extremely high inflation, peaking at 25% in the late 1970s, and its rate consistently stayed well above Germany's for most of this era. Conversely, West Germany maintained relative price stability, with inflation fluctuating moderately around 5% before decreasing in the mid-1980s. This significant divergence highlights the different macroeconomic conditions and policies in the two countries prior to the Euro.
