In Chapter 34, Poem 16 of Attar's Mokhtar Nameh, the divine visitor decrees that the seeker must undergo severe spiritual affliction—symbolized by madness and burning—to be purified. The Beloved instructs the seeker to remain 'outside' until their inner self is entirely emptied of the ego and worldly attachments.
