Divine Pain as Remedy and the Annihilation of Self in Attar's Mokhtar Nameh (Chapter 11, Poem 41)
In Chapter 11, Poem 41 of his Mokhtar Nameh, Farid al-Din Attar illustrates the Sufi paradox where the 'pain' of divine longing is the only cure for the seeker's heart. He pairs this with the concept of Fana (annihilation of the ego): attaining awareness of the Divine requires the complete cessation of self-awareness. The true lover is entirely consumed by the Beloved, leaving no room for individual ego or self-interest.
