Divine Protection and the Paradox of Nimrod's Origins in the Elahi Nameh
In Attar's Elahi Nameh, the tale of Nimrod begins with a dramatic shipwreck. A pregnant woman survives on a plank, gives birth to a son, and then perishes in the sea. Miraculously, God commands the elements—the waves, wind, and marine life—to protect the newborn infant, who is eventually saved by a fisherman. The child grows up to become the arrogant and tyrannical King Nimrod, who famously challenges God. Attar uses this narrative to illustrate the unfathomable nature of divine will and providence, showing how God's mercy and protection extend even to one who will ultimately become an archetype of hubris and unbelief. This foundational story served as a direct source and inspiration for Jalal al-Din Rumi's later adaptation of the narrative in Book Six of the Masnavi.
