Domain Name Resolution and the Internet Phone Book
The Domain Name System (DNS) serves as the "phone book" of the Internet. While human users navigate networks using human-friendly, memorable domain names such as example.com, networking hardware and protocols require numeric IP addresses to route data packets to the correct destination machine.
