Alcohol-Related Disorders are those in which the involvement of alcohol, as a substance, by an individual results in significant problems and impairment in behaviors, functioning, and/or overall health.

Caffeine-Related Disorders are those in which the involvement of caffeine, as a substance (including caffeinated beverages and additives), by an individual results in significant problems and impairment in behaviors, functioning, and/or overall health.

Cannabis-Related Disorders are those in which the involvement of substances derived from the cannabis plant (and similar synthetic compounds), by an individual results in significant problems and impairment in behaviors, functioning, and/or overall health. This is particularly apparent, but not exclusive, to the component cannabinoid delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-9-THC or THC).

Cannabis-Related Disorders

The DSM-5-TR also separates Substance-Related Disorders into more specific categories dependent upon the substance(s) used by the individual. These categories include:
- Alcohol-Related Disorders
- Caffeine-Related Disorders
- Cannabis-Related Disorders
- Hallucinogen-Related Disorders
- Inhalant-Related Disorders
- Opioid-Related Disorders
- Sedative-, Hypnotic-, or Anxiolytic-Related Disorders
- Stimulant-Related Disorders
- Tobacco-Related Disorders
- Other (or Unknown) Substance-Related Disorders


Within the DSM-5-TR, Substance-Related Disorders are categorized as such due to the presence of (an excess of) drugs that have the ability to directly affect the brain reward systems that are involved in the reinforcement of behaviors and/or the establishment of memories. While the pharmacological differences in the impact of these drug classes on the brain may be different, they still commonly create the sense of pleasure or induce a “high” in the individual.

The DSM-5-TR first explains the different types of Substance-Related Disorders that exist independent of any specific substance. These disorders explain the general diagnostic criteria and features that can be applied to all the other specific substance-related disorders listed later in the chapter. These general disorder types are:

- Substance Withdrawal
- Substance-Induced Mental Disorder
