To be diagnosed with anorexia, one must be below 17 on the BMI scale, consider themselves overweight, and have an intense fear of gaining weight, and engage in caloric restriction. However, because diagnostic criteria is based on BMI, those with BMIs above 17 often go untreated despite demonstrating all other diagnostic criteria.

People with this disorder may exhibit obsessive-compulsive behaviors relating to food, such as constant fixation and hoarding of food, though this is not required for diagnosis. 

Anorexia nervosa

Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorder (OSFED) is a category of eating disorders in which individuals do not meet full criteria for other eating disorders. Around 30% of individuals diagnosed with an eating disorder fall into this classification.

Pica is an eating disorder in which an individual compulsively consumes inedible items. The inedible items consumed vary by those with the disorder.

Pica

A disorder commonly found in children, ARFID can be described as extremely picky eating, though fear foods differ significantly from those with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Although ARFID involves food restriction and thus shares some features with anorexia nervosa, the fear and restriction surrounding food is not due to concerns about weight or body image.

Rumination disorder is an eating disorder where an individual unconsciously regurgitates food immediately after eating. This eating disorder is rare and is most common in children.

Rumination Disorder

Similarly to individuals with bulimia nervosa, patients with binge eating disorder experience out-of-control food consumption episodes in short periods of time known as binges. However, unlike in bulimia nervosa, there are no compensatory purging efforts following.

Binge Eating Disorder (BED)

Bulimia nervosa is marked by food binges followed by compensating purging efforts at least once per week over the course of at least three months. Depending on the purging methods (physical expulsion of consumed food v. exercise), those with bulimia would be classified into the purging type or nonpurging type of this disorder. Unlike anorexia nervosa, weight loss (minimal or extreme) is not required for a diagnosis of bulimia. Often, bulimia nervosa patients' weights are healthy or overweight, making it more difficult to detect and diagnose.
