Specialized network hardware directs and regulates data flow: switches connect devices locally and forward frames using MAC addresses; routers link distinct networks and route packets via IP addresses; access points connect wireless Wi-Fi devices to wired networks; and firewalls inspect traffic to enforce security rules.

Data is transmitted in small, individually addressed segments called packets that travel independently across network paths, guided hop-by-hop by routers before being reassembled at the destination.

When establishing a reliable connection via TCP, communication begins with a three-way handshake before any application data is sent:
1. The client sends a **SYN** message requesting a connection.
2. The server responds with a **SYN-ACK** acknowledging the request.
3. The client replies with an **ACK** to establish the connection.
