In the United States, the economic cost of school closures was estimated to be 6% of the GDP, or $2.7 million per 1,000 people (based on 2009 data). However, because healthcare costs could rise from increased disease transmission if closures are not implemented, school closures might still be considered a cost-effective strategy.
