The gap in assessment of one’s own group compared to a group they are not a member of can be widened with the use of statistical baselines. Clinton supporters thought Trump supporters consumed even more fake news when given statistics on the consumption of fake news about people in general. 


The effect of baseline statistics on the group central bias

Clinton supporters estimated Trump supporters to consume more fake news than other Clinton supporters, and Trump supporters exhibited the same bias to a lesser degree.
