Learning that is designed to enhance the act of encoding knowledge. Elaborative learning aims to help knowledge get stored as memory. Elaborative learning is an important aspect of many modern educational practices.

The cue-driven process of recalling and reconstructing information. Retrieval was assumed to be a neutral learning process, a task done to recall information that did not serve to enhance learning. Now a retrieval event is viewed as a learning activity in itself.

This paper discusses the findings of a study that compared elaborative learning to retrieving and reconstructing knowledge. They found that retrieval and reconstruction practices resulted in better comprehension and the development of inferences than elaborative learning.
