In Cognitive Remediation and Emotion Skills Training (CREST), therapists review educational material and conduct collaborative cognitive activities to develop emotional skills. Therapists discuss emotions that patients experience and associate with Anorexia Nervosa (AN). In group settings, patients engage in discussion-based exercises and are encouraged to implement small, positive behavioral changes, subsequently reviewing their impact on well-being with therapists. CREST modules address specific aspects of emotional processing: understanding the function of emotions, identifying different emotional states, and learning to communicate and express feelings effectively.

Structure and Delivery of CREST

The study discussed the success of CREST as an individual treatment method based on the self-reported outcomes of the individual participants of the study. In this exploratory study, the efficacy and impact of CREST were examined for inpatients that were diagnosed with anorexia nervosa. It was found that the CREST intervention method led to an increase in feeling, an improvement on the labeling of emotions, and an increase in confidence. In this trial study, ten sessions were conducted and improvement was shown from the CREST method, which indicated that the initial results produced by CREST are promising, Still further research needs to be conducted. 

Success of CREST as an individual treatment method

In this study, the clinical and self-reported data were collected before the administration of CREST intervention and after CREST was performed. These results indicate that CREST caused improvements in identifying emotions, and regulating emotions and caused an increase in BMI in the patients. Additionally, there was a decrease in the symptoms of eating disorders as well. The case study provides evidence that CREST is very useful as a low-intensity intervention technique. Additionally, CREST was classified as a technique used before more comprehensive therapies, such as cognitive behavior therapy.
