While some studies have linked negative emotions with reduced language capabilities in aphasiacs, far more studies have linked negative emotions with reduced language capabilities in stutterers, showing a need for greater studies and more investigation into depression and anxiety in aphasiacs.

Multiple studies have shown that impaired emotional state negatively impacts an individual's cognitive processing. This is also true in those with aphasia. Depression, anxiety, and symptoms found in such conditions may inhibit one's ability to regain speech production or relearn as quickly as others.

Individuals with depression tend to struggle with inhibiting negative thoughts, allowing distractions to interrupt language processing. Individuals with depression also show decreased interest in making or meeting goals, possibly inhibiting language / speech work.

Those suffering from anxiety and symptoms of anxiety show problems in working memory recall and a shift in what topics receive attention, causing the speaker to struggle with speech recall and/ or possibly pay inadequate attention to speech tasks./

Post-Stroke Anxiety or Depression is commonly defined by the onset of at least four or more of the following symptoms for two or more weeks after the stroke event: decreased interest in activities, decreased pleasure in life, changes in weight/ appetite, changes in sleep, poor energy, guilt, feelings of worthlessness, excessive worrying, low energy, poor concentration, suicidal thoughts, increased muscle tension, and slower or less accurate hand-eye coordination and motion.

Symptoms of Anxiety and Depression in Post-Stroke Aphasiacs

In the acute state, the onset of such emotional conditions is typically missed while in the chronic stage the condition typically goes undiagnosed. 

Difficulty in Diagnosing Post-Stroke Emotional States

About one third of post-stroke aphasiacs have depression. 

Prevalence of Depression in Post Stroke Aphasiacs

Studies indicate that anxiety is fairly common among individuals with post-stroke aphasia. Preliminary findings suggest it may be more prevalent in certain types of aphasia, such as Broca's aphasia compared to Wernicke's aphasia, although further research is required.
