Employment and its relation to disparate outcomes in the COVID-19 pandemic
Those who are unemployed are more likely to have stress-related diseases, such as CVD, diabetes, and hypertension, which are all risk factors for COVID-19. Furthermore, due to stay-at-home and quarantine orders during the pandemic, many Americans have lost income, either by being unemployed, having a reduced salary, or put on unpaid leave. A disparity is seen in the fact that 61% of Hispanics and 44% of black people have reported that they have experienced wage or job loss due to the pandemic, while 38% of white people have reported so. Because health insurance is attached to having a job for many people, unemployment means not having health insurance for many Americans.
