Endless Sorrow and Lamentation in Attar's Mokhtar Nameh (Chapter 43, Poem 5)
This quatrain from Attar's Mokhtar Nameh explores the theme of profound, inescapable sorrow in the face of mortality and loss. The striking imagery of a 'moon beneath the clouds' suggests the obscuring or death of the beloved, while the heads 'beneath the sword' evoke the inevitability of destruction. Consequently, the speaker resolves that for whatever remains of their life, their constant prayer or litany (tasbih) will be 'Alas!' (ای دریغ), emphasizing a state of perpetual grief and regret.
