Endospore Protective Layers

Following forespore formation, the endospore develops multiple protective layers during sporulation. A cortex is constructed by laying down layers of calcium and dipicolinic acid between membranes. A protein coat then forms around the cortex, and further maturation produces an outermost exosporium before the mature endospore is released.
