To be at risk for acute stress disorder, someone has to have been exposed to or experienced a traumatic event, and may be at a higher risk for the disorder if they happen to have a history of experience to prior trauma.

Individuals who previously were diagnosed with a mental disorder, report higher levels of negative emotional responses, or experience an avoidant coping style are more at risk for acute stress disorder. If an individual tends to make catastrophic or exaggerated self-harm comments, they may be more likely to be suffering from acute stress disorder.
