Social neglect is required for this disorder to be diagnosed, as a strong correlation was found among the two. Other factors related to this diagnosis include multiple placements, having a mother with borderline personality disorder, atypical caregiving, and low quality of care. The disorder has not been found in children who are socially neglected past age 2. In many situations, the disorder continues, even if the children’s caregiving is significantly improved.
