Some epileptics experience mood disorder symptoms constantly, while others experience them just before, during, or after a seizure. The most common mood disorders experienced are depression and dysthymia. Although anxiety is not a mood disorder, it is also commonly experienced alongside epilepsy.

Although uncommon, rates of OCD, ADHD, and psychosis are more commonly reported in populations with epilepsy than without.

Additional Conditions Reported With Epilepsy

People with epilepsy experience a higher than average amount of certain mood and psychological disorders. Some of these result directly from the effects of the abnormal brain activity seizures stem from, while others are secondary effects. However, most epileptics find they have no abnormal emotional or psychological symptoms.
