In 1920, John B. Watson and Rosalie Rayner conducted an experiment with a baby nicknamed Little Albert. They demonstrated that fears can be conditioned by exposing Little Albert to a neutral white rat and repeatedly pairing it with a sudden, loud noise. The loud noise naturally caused a reflexive fear response. Eventually, Little Albert became frightened by the white rat alone, showing that emotions could become conditioned responses.

Days after the initial conditioning to fear a white rat, Little Albert demonstrated stimulus generalization. He became afraid of other furry things that resembled the conditioned stimulus, such as a rabbit, a furry coat, and a Santa Claus mask.

John B. Watson's intention in the Little Albert experiment was to demonstrate that a phobia—a persistent, excessive fear of a specific object or situation—could be produced through conditioning alone. This countered Freud's view that phobias are caused by deep, hidden conflicts in the mind. However, there is no evidence that Little Albert actually experienced phobias in later years.
