Evaluating a Cooperative Strategy

Four farmers are considering a joint irrigation project. Contributing costs a farmer $10. For each contribution made by any farmer, every one of the four farmers' crop yield increases by $8. A fellow student makes the following argument: 'If all four farmers contribute, each one receives a benefit of $32 (4 x $8) for a cost of $10, yielding a net payoff of $22. This is a great outcome for everyone. Therefore, from an individual's perspective, contributing is the most logical choice.' Critically evaluate this argument. Is the conclusion that contributing is the most logical choice for an individual seeking to maximize their own personal payoff correct? Justify your answer by analyzing the payoffs for a single farmer based on their choice to contribute or not.
