Evaluating a Corporate Stance on Environmental Impact

A CEO of a large-scale agricultural company, when questioned about clearing a tract of primary forest for a new plantation, states: 'Our project creates hundreds of jobs and produces food affordably. Complaining about the loss of some insects and plants is misguided because these things have no market price and therefore no economic value.' Critically evaluate the CEO's statement. In your answer, explain the economic reasoning behind why the absence of a market price for biodiversity leads to its over-consumption.
