Short Answer

Evaluating a Farming Partnership

An experienced farmer, Alex, can harvest 100 pounds of potatoes or 50 pounds of carrots in a day. A novice farmer, Ben, can harvest 60 pounds of potatoes or 40 pounds of carrots in a day. A friend advises Alex that since he is more productive at harvesting both crops, he should not waste time trading with Ben. Is this advice correct? Justify your answer by calculating the opportunity cost for each farmer to produce one pound of carrots and explaining how this affects the potential for a beneficial trade.
