Short Answer

Evaluating a Labor Contract for Efficiency

A landowner proposes a contract requiring a worker to work 10 hours per day. At this level of effort, an additional hour of work would produce 2 extra bushels of grain. The worker, however, values their last hour of leisure at an equivalent of 3 bushels of grain. Is the total economic surplus maximized in this arrangement? Explain why or why not, and describe the change (more or fewer hours) that could make both parties better off.
