Evaluating a Manager's Altruistic Decision

A manager must choose between two project strategies. Her choice will determine her own bonus and the bonus for a junior team member. The manager has altruistic preferences, meaning her overall satisfaction is influenced by both her own and the team member's outcomes.

  • Strategy A: Results in a ($5,000 bonus for the manager, $1,000 bonus for the team member).
  • Strategy B: Results in a ($4,000 bonus for the manager, $4,000 bonus for the team member).

The manager's personal satisfaction is higher for the outcome from Strategy B than for the outcome from Strategy A, so she chooses Strategy B.

Evaluate the manager's decision. In your evaluation, explain the trade-off she made and contrast her choice with the one a purely self-interested individual would have made.
