Evaluating a Policy Claim on Unearned Income

A policymaker makes the following statement regarding a proposed one-time, unconditional cash payment to all hourly workers: 'Giving people money they didn't work for is a terrible idea. They will have less reason to work, will choose to work fewer hours, and some may stop working altogether. This will harm their productivity and the overall economy.'

Critically evaluate the policymaker's claim. In your response, use the economic principles of an individual's choice between consumption (goods purchased with money) and free time. Is the policymaker's prediction entirely correct, partially correct, or fundamentally flawed? Justify your position.
