Evaluating a Policy Statement on Salt Taxation

A politician proposes a new 30% sales tax on salt, to be collected directly from the producers. In a public statement, the politician claims, "This tax is a fair way to raise government revenue because it targets large corporations, not everyday consumers. Since the producers are the ones sending the check to the government, they will be the only ones to bear the cost." Critically evaluate the politician's claim. In your response, explain how the economic burden of this tax is likely to be distributed and why the politician's reasoning is flawed.
