Case Study

Evaluating a Policy with a Work-Hour Restriction

Consider an individual whose preferences for consumption (cc) and free time (tt) are represented by the utility function u(t,c) = tc. This person has 24 hours per day to allocate, earns an hourly wage of $15, and has no other income. A new government program is introduced that provides a daily grant of $60, but recipients are not allowed to work more than 8 hours per day. Analyze whether the individual should opt into this program by calculating their utility level with and without the program and explaining which option they would choose.
