Case Study

Evaluating a Production Model's Validity

An agricultural startup is testing a new nutrient additive. They measure the amount of additive used (x, in grams) and the resulting total crop yield (y, in kilograms). Their data shows that as they increase the additive from 0 to 100 grams, the total yield consistently increases. However, for any amount of additive greater than 100 grams, they observe that the total yield begins to decrease.

Based on the core characteristic that a production function must be an increasing function (more input leads to more output), does the observed relationship between the nutrient and the yield represent a valid production function over the entire range of input tested? Justify your conclusion.
