Evaluating Alternative Research Designs

A researcher wants to study the long-term economic effects of a historical forced labor system that was implemented within a specific geographic boundary. The researcher proposes comparing the average economic outcomes of all communities that were inside the boundary to the average outcomes of all communities in the rest of the country.

Critique this proposed research design. Explain why an alternative approach, which compares only communities located very close to but on opposite sides of the boundary, is considered a more robust method for identifying the true causal impact of the historical system.
