Case Study

Critique of a Proposed Research Design

A junior researcher, inspired by the study on the Mita system's historical boundary, proposes a new study. To assess the long-term impact of a historical trade route, they plan to compare a village located directly on the route (the 'treatment' group) with a village located 100 miles away in a different geographical region. The researcher argues that the distant village provides a 'purer' control group, as it was completely untouched by the trade route's influence. Evaluate the strength of this proposed research design. Is it stronger or weaker than comparing villages located very near each other, but on opposite sides of the trade route boundary? Justify your reasoning.
