Case Study

Evaluating an Economic Interpretation

An economics student is analyzing a graph that shows an individual's choice between 'consumption now' (horizontal axis) and 'consumption later' (vertical axis). The individual starts with all their resources, $200, in the present, represented by the point (200, 0). Their optimal choice is to consume at the point (120, 80).

The student concludes: "The individual consumes $120 now and will consume $80 later. The amount they stored for the future must also be $80, because that is the vertical distance from the horizontal axis to the optimal point."

Evaluate the student's conclusion. Is their reasoning entirely correct? Explain why or why not.
