Evaluating an Experimental Conclusion

A researcher studies behavior in a group investment game. They create two conditions with different sets of randomly assigned participants. In the first condition, participants play the game for 10 rounds. In the second condition, participants play the same game for 10 rounds, but they are also given the option to anonymously pay a small amount to reduce another player's earnings. The researcher observes that average contributions are significantly higher in the second condition.

Based on this experiment, the researcher concludes: 'The availability of a punishment mechanism is the direct cause of the increased cooperation we observed.'

Critically evaluate this conclusion. Is the researcher's claim fully supported by the experimental design described? Explain your reasoning.
