Case Study

Evaluating Contractual Structures for a Project

A technology firm is launching a new project to develop a mobile application. The project requires two distinct types of work:

  1. Translating the app's user interface text into five different languages, a task where the output is clear and quality is easily verified.
  2. Designing a novel and engaging user experience (UX), a creative process that is difficult to specify in advance and involves iterative problem-solving.

The firm is considering two types of agreements for these roles: an employment contract (paying a weekly salary for a set number of hours) and a contract for a specific result (paying a fixed fee for each completed task, e.g., per language translated or per design milestone).

Evaluate which type of agreement would be more advantageous for the firm for each of the two roles (translator and UX designer). Justify your evaluation by explaining how the nature of an employment contract (payment for time) is better suited to one task, while a contract for a result (payment for output) is better suited to the other.
