Case Study

Evaluating Distributional Outcomes of Increased Productivity

Three plans are proposed for distributing the new, larger harvest of 20,000 bushels:

  • Plan A: Landowners receive 11,000 bushels; Tenant farmers receive 9,000 bushels.
  • Plan B: Landowners receive 15,000 bushels; Tenant farmers receive 5,000 bushels.
  • Plan C: Landowners receive 17,000 bushels; Tenant farmers receive 3,000 bushels.

Evaluate these three plans. Which plan makes one of the groups worse off than they were before the new technique was introduced, despite the overall increase in production? Justify your answer by comparing the shares in that plan to the historical shares.
