Evaluating Economic Decisions with Unaccounted Costs

A banana plantation owner decides to use a new, highly effective pesticide. This decision is based on a calculation that the cost of the pesticide is far outweighed by the increased revenue from higher crop yields, making it a profitable choice. However, the pesticide contaminates local water sources, causing significant health problems and destroying the livelihoods of a nearby fishing community. Evaluate the plantation owner's decision from the perspective of (a) the owner's private profitability and (b) overall societal economic efficiency. Justify why these two perspectives lead to different conclusions.
