Evaluating GDP as a Measure of Societal Progress

A political leader argues, 'Our primary goal must be to maximize economic growth, as measured by the Gross Domestic Product. A rising GDP is the best indicator of our nation's success and the well-being of our citizens.' Drawing upon the central arguments from the 1968 critique of this measurement, analyze the potential flaws in this leader's statement. In your analysis, provide at least one example of an activity that increases the measurement but may decrease societal well-being, and one example of an activity that increases well-being but is not captured by the measurement.
