Evaluating Historical Economic Arguments

Historical data shows that from 1600 to 1975, Japan's average income grew 17-fold while Britain's grew 11-fold. It is also noted that Japan was more successful in resisting foreign intervention than many of its neighbors. Propose and briefly explain one plausible alternative factor, not related to foreign intervention, that could help account for Japan's more rapid rate of growth.
