Evaluating Large-Scale Firm Coordination

A single retail firm can successfully direct the work of over two million employees, a workforce larger than most armies in history. Critically evaluate the proposition that this model of centralized, hierarchical coordination within a firm is the most effective method for organizing such a vast number of individuals toward a common commercial goal. In your answer, consider both the advantages and potential disadvantages of this organizational structure compared to other possible ways of organizing economic activity.
