Evaluating Policies to Influence Income Distribution

A government is concerned about a long-term trend where the portion of national income paid to workers has been shrinking, while the portion going to company profits has been growing. Two policy options are being debated to reverse this trend:

  • Policy A: Strengthen laws that prevent single companies from dominating an industry and provide financial support for new business startups.
  • Policy B: Provide tax breaks and direct financial aid to large, established corporations with the goal of encouraging them to expand their operations.

Evaluate both policy options. Which policy is more likely to be effective in increasing the share of national income that goes to worker wages? Justify your choice by explaining the underlying economic mechanism that connects the level of business competition to the division of income between wages and profits.
