Evaluating Policy Statements on Disinflation

Imagine an economy has experienced a prolonged period of high inflation, initially triggered by a sharp increase in the cost of imported energy. Recently, these energy costs have fallen significantly. A policymaker claims: 'The external price shock that caused our inflation is now over. Therefore, we should expect inflation to fall back to our 2% target very quickly and without any lingering effects.'

Critically evaluate this policymaker's statement. In your answer, explain why the disinflationary process might be slower or more complex than the statement suggests, paying particular attention to the behavior of wages and prices during this adjustment period.
