Evaluating Strategic Choices in a Tech Market

Imagine two competing tech companies are independently deciding whether to build their new flagship software on an open-source, collaborative platform or a closed, proprietary platform. Building on the open-source platform would contribute to a shared technological ecosystem that could benefit both companies in the long run through community support and innovation. However, building on a proprietary platform could offer a short-term competitive advantage by creating a unique system that locks in customers.

Analyze the potential social outcomes if both companies act purely in their own short-term self-interest. In your analysis, explain why this pursuit of self-interest is likely to lead to a less-than-ideal outcome for the industry and consumers as a whole, compared to a scenario where they could coordinate their actions.
