Evaluating Strategies to Increase Employee Effort

A company is experiencing low productivity and wants to motivate its employees to exert more effort. One manager proposes reducing wages for underperforming employees, arguing this will increase the cost of job loss for everyone. Another manager suggests investing in non-wage benefits, such as a better work environment and more flexible hours, to make the job more valuable.

Using the concept of the net value an employee receives from their job compared to their next best alternative, evaluate the potential effectiveness of both proposals. In your answer, explain how each strategy would alter the different components that determine this net value, and justify which approach is more likely to create a sustainable incentive for higher effort.
