Evaluating 18th-Century Maritime Labor Models

Consider two distinct models of shipboard organization from the 18th century.

  • Model A (Merchant Ship): The captain holds absolute authority, often using harsh discipline. Sailors receive a fixed, low wage, paid only at the end of a long voyage. Food and living conditions are poor, and the distribution of any profits beyond wages is entirely at the captain's discretion.
  • Model B (Pirate Ship): The crew elects the captain, who can be removed by a majority vote. All major decisions are made democratically. Rules are written down and agreed upon by all. Loot is distributed in pre-agreed shares, with the captain and officers receiving only slightly more than a common sailor.

Evaluate which of these two models would be more effective at fostering crew motivation and unity. In your evaluation, justify your choice by explaining how the specific rules and power structures of each model would likely influence the behavior and attitudes of the sailors.
