Evidence Against the Energy Conservation Hypothesis of Sleep

Although the energy conservation hypothesis provides an intuitive evolutionary explanation for sleep, there is little empirical research supporting it. Some researchers suggest that energetic demands could be met with periods of rest and inactivity rather than actual sleep. Furthermore, some studies have found a negative correlation between an organism's energetic demands and the amount of time spent sleeping, challenging the idea that sleep's primary function is to restore depleted resources.
