Evidence for Personality as a Risk Factor in Disease

Empirical evidence supports the link between personality traits and negative health outcomes. For example, a major study involving over 61,000 Norwegians established depression as a risk factor for mortality from all major diseases. Furthermore, neuroticism—a personality trait defined by anxiety, moodiness, and sadness—has been identified as a risk factor for developing chronic health problems and for increased mortality.
