Evolution of Attitudes Towards Disabilities in Botswana
Disabilities were taken negatively as they were seen as curses. However, such negative attitudes are not necessarily linked to traditional views but rather current perspectives developed over the last 150 years alongside notable sociological changes, including increased wage labor that contributed to a rise in disability numbers. Different age groups at the time saw disabilities differently. The elderly saw it as a natural progression with age that signaled becoming closer with one’s ancestors. The younger generation saw them as symbols of misfortune due to vengeful forces. Though attitudes are improving with media exposure to disabilities, people still notably hold superstitious beliefs about them, discouraging people with special needs from reaching out for help.
