Examining the match hypothesis in business students (Vansteenkiste, Simons, Lens, Sheldon, and Deci 2004; Study 2)

Business students who had reported being extrinsically oriented were told that a learning activity abut communication principles would either help them get more money or help their personal development. The findings contradicted the match hypothesis and extrinsic goals were found to undermine learning.
