Example of Just Noticeable Difference

An example of the just noticeable difference can be seen by comparing the visibility of a cell phone screen in different environments. In a dark movie theater, the light from a phone screen is a significant change in illumination and is easily noticed. However, in a brightly lit basketball arena, the same phone screen light would likely go unnoticed because the change in illumination is not significant enough relative to the high intensity of the existing background light.
